What Is A Prospective Marriage Visa?

The Prospective Marriage Visa (Subclass 300) is a type of visa offered by the Australian government which enables prospective marriage partners of Australian citizens to gain the right to travel to the country for the purpose of marriage. A person is eligible for this visa if they intend to marry an Australian citizen, a permanent resident of Australia or an eligible New Zealand citizen. The applicant must be outside Australia to apply for this visa.

The visa lasts for 9 months and is designed to allow a person to travel to Australia so that they can plan and organize their wedding. While the wedding does not necessarily have to occur within Australia, it must occur within the 9 month period to satisfy the conditions of the visa.

After a person becomes married they should apply for an Onshore Partner visa which is the next step to achieving permanent resident status in Australia as the married partner of an Australian citizen.
