• Facebook is developing an AI that summarizes news into short snippets. The system, known as TL;DR (which stands for ‘Too Long; Didn’t Read’) will try to strike a balance between summarizing news topics but not so much that the news story has no context and thus loses its full meaning. Done poorly the AI could increase the amount of misinformation (so called ‘fake news’) and add to the erosion of trust in the media.
• The EU’s fundamental rights agency has released a report on AI which focuses on ethical considerations that must accompany the use of the technology. While AI has helped provide better cancer diagnoses and has had other beneficial effects, there are also negatives such as the biases which are unconsciously built into the algorithms that the technology uses. The report analyzes how fundamental human rights can be upheld when using AI.
