George Friedman is an American political scientist, author, and commentator. He is the founder and CEO of Geopolitical Futures, a global intelligence company. Friedman has written extensively about geopolitics and international affairs.

Friedman was born in Budapest, Hungary. He and his family escaped the Communist regime in 1956 during the Hungarian Revolution. They fled to a refugee camp in Austria before settling in the United States.
After graduating high school, Friedman attended Rutgers University, earning a bachelor’s degree in political science and history. He went on to make an MA and Ph.D. in government with a focus on Soviet studies at Cornell University.
In 1969, Friedman joined the US Army as an intelligence analyst specializing in Russia and Eastern Europe. In 1974, he left active duty but remained in the US Army Reserve until 1976. After completing his military service, Friedman held various teaching positions at colleges across the country, including Mercyhurst College, the University of Colorado Boulder, and George Washington University.
