Handy Tips for Growing Roses

Growing roses can sometimes be a challenge, but with these simple tips, you can transform your garden into a colorful oasis. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced green thumb, these helpful hints will ensure the success of your rose-growing endeavors.

The first step in growing healthy roses is soil preparation. Roses prefer well-draining soil, so it’s important to add compost and manure to the mix before planting. To ensure proper drainage, place two to four inches of mulch on top after planting and water thoroughly. Make sure plants are getting adequate sun; six hours per day is ideal for most varieties. Pruning is also essential for keeping plants healthy and happy through the season; cut away dead wood, leaves, and spent blooms as needed throughout spring and early summer. Prune your roses after flowering in order to promote new growth and blooms for next season’s flowers.
